Hargeisa (HOL) — The Somaliland military has declared its determination to reclaim the Sool region, including the key city of Lasanod, which it lost to local forces supported by Puntland. The assertion follows a major defeat on August 2023, which saw breakaway Somaliland forces ousted from much of the Sool region, including its capital, Las Anod.
Commander Nuh Ismail Tani of the Somaliland military emphasized the readiness and strength of his troops, despite the recent setbacks. "Our army, which sacrifices their lives for our country, retains its strength and resilience," Tani told government media. He assured the people of Somaliland that the military is approaching a critical juncture in its efforts to recapture lost territories.
Amidst the turmoil, local leaders have established an independent administration named SSC Khatumo, now recognized by the Somali government as an interim administration. SSC Khatumo seeks to expand its governance over the regions of Sool, Sanaag, and Ayn, aiming for full integration into the Federal Government of Somalia.
Somaliland continues to assert its claim over the Sool region, stepping up troop training to counter the recent military defeats.
