Over four dozen al Shabab militants killed in southern Somalia

Thursday June 22, 2023

Mogadishu (HOL) - The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), with the support of Somalia's international partners, killed at least 45 al Shabab militants during a security operation in southern Somalia on Thursday.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Information, the joint planned operation was carried out on the Fay Yusuf farm near the village of Yimbis in the Lower Shabelle region.

The Ministry further stated that the joint forces also destroyed the group's shelters in the area. The militants killed in the operation had been planning an attack on the Barire district in the Lower Shabelle region. However, the NISA received information about their plans, leading to the attack on their shelters.

Earlier this week, the Somali government announced that 43 militants were killed in an airstrike near Jamame, a major Al-Shabaab stronghold in the Lower Juba region. Officials reported that the strike specifically targeted a group of 43 militants, primarily focusing on Aden Abdirahman Adan and his deputy, Idris Abdirahim Noor. Both individuals, who are foreign jihadists from Kenya, were reportedly planning a significant attack.

The government has yet to disclose further information regarding the targeted militants' fate but confirmed the airstrike resulted in both casualties and injuries.
