Thursday June 22, 2023

Kismayo (HOL) - At least eight people were killed and 19 others injured in two explosions in Somalia's southwestern town of Bardhere in the Gedo region on Wednesday.

The initial blast targeted a base housing the Somali National Army and Ethiopian forces, part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), State Minister for Environment and Climate Change Adan Aw Hirsi disclosed. The subsequent explosion struck a checkpoint near the town's airport.

"Our forces intercepted the first VBIED (Vehicle-Borne Improvised Explosive Device), but, regrettably, the second was successful," Hirsi announced in a succinct Twitter statement.

The militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the assaults in the Bardhere district. The group expressed that one of the attacks specifically aimed at the Ethiopian Army, recently arrived reinforcements at the ADC camp where the initial strike took place.

The attack come after the Somali government's recent disclosure of a proactive airstrike close to Jamame, a major Al-Shabaab stronghold in the Lower Juba region. Officials reported the strike focused on a group of 43 militants, primarily targeting Aden Abdirahman Adan and his deputy, Idris Abdirahim Noor. Both individuals, foreign jihadists from Kenya, were reportedly planning a significant attack.

The government has yet to disclose further information regarding the targeted militants' fate but confirmed the airstrike resulted in both casualties and injuries.
