Mogadishu (HOL) - At least three officers, including a military colonel, have been arrested in connection with Monday's suicide bombing at an army base in Mogadishu, which killed at least 30 soldiers and left more than 70 others injured.
Reports suggest that additional arrests may follow as authorities intensify their efforts to uncover the events leading up to the attack. Investigators are mainly focused on identifying those who aided the suicide bomber in gaining access to the base.
The victims, who hailed from the Lower Shabelle region, had arrived in the capital for training. At the time of the incident, the soldiers were in a queue being counted when the suicide bomber detonated himself.
The circumstances surrounding Al Shabaab's infiltration of the army camp have raised significant concerns. Among the skeptics is the Speaker of the Somali Parliament, Sheikh Adan Madobe, who has deemed the attack on the Jaalle Siyaad military base by Al Shabaab as unacceptable. He calls for the Armed Forces Command to provide a clear response.
As of this date, both the president and prime minister have yet to comment on the incident.
A military campaign launched by government forces and allied militiamen last year has forced the al Qaeda-linked group from large swathes of territory in southern Somalia, but the militants have continued to stage deadly raids.
