Ten candidates register candidacy for Somali President

Sunday May 8, 2022

Mogadishu (HOL) - The joint parliamentary committee tasked with organizing the presidential election has registered ten candidates for the 10th president of the Federal Republic of Somalia on Sunday.

The candidates who registered their candidacy are included former president Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, former minister for information Dahir Mohamoud Gelle, Bashir Hajji Ali, Abdukhadir Osoble Ali, Abdullahi Ali Hassan, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Kheire, Abdinur Sheikh Mohamed, former Galmudug regional president Abdikarim Hussein Guled, Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, and Abdirahman Moalim Ahmed Ablaal.

Several other candidates, including the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and former president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, are expected to register on Tuesday, the final day of the registration for the candidates.

Somalia's long-overdue presidential election will occur at airport hunger in Mogadishu on May 15.

On May 6, the Hirshabelle regional state governments became the last state to conclude the Lower House election; however, the new leadership of the Lower House of Somali parliament certified the 16 MPs elected in the El-Wak district in the Gedo region.

The Lower House speakers said in a statement on Sunday that they reached the decision after seeing that the members of parliament elected in Elwak had gone through all the election procedures.

They added that the Jubbaland president presided over the election in Elwak, that the Federal Indirect Election Implementation Team (FIEIT) validated the elected parliamentarians, and that the prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, who was in charge of the country's indirect elections in 2021/2022, had backed them up.
