Mogadishu (HOL) - The new leadership of the Lower House of Somali parliament certified the 16 MPs elected in El-Wak district in the Gedo region, putting an end to the contentious Jubaland elections.

The Lower House speaker said in a statement on Sunday that they reached their decision after seeing that the members of parliament elected in Elwak had gone through all the election procedures.

They added that the Jubbaland president presided over the election in Elwak, that the Federal Indirect Election Implementation Team (FIEIT) validated the elected parliamentarians, and that the prime minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, who was in charge of the country's indirect elections in 2021/2022, had backed them up.

Sheikh Adan' Madoobe' previously said that the presidential election would not happen until parliament settled the Gedo issue.

There were 32 MPs elected from the Gedo constituency in two separate elections in Elwak and Garbaharey last month.

President Farmajo - who is seeking reelection later this month - called both elections illegitimate and called for a leadership convention to reach a political agreement on the 16 disputed seats.

Somali lawmakers have set May 15 as the date they will select the country's next president.
