Monday June 14, 2021

MOGADISHU (HOL) -  Police in Mogadishu said Monday it arrested 27 people linked to human trafficking in the city.

Police spokesman Sadiq Aden Doodishe told journalists the 27, among them two women were nabbed on June 8 following operations in Mogadishu.

He said the suspects were responsible for trafficking youth out of the country but did not give details about the ring.

The human trafficking syndicate has been operating the capital for a while, the police officers acting on a tip off, have successfully arrested the operators. Our officers are carrying out investigations into their cases and soon they will be taken to court to face charges,” said Doodishe.

In late 2020, authorities in Puntland said they had rescued over 300 children who had been abducted from their families in the hope of being given rewarding jobs only to end up in the hands of human traffickers who use the children for among others, organ harvesting.

In September 2019, police in Mogadishu rescued children aged between 7 months and 12 years after bursting a trafficking ring and arrested 11 people among them eight women.

There have been cases in Somalia where youth were lured to take dangerous journeys overseas hoping to reach Europe but were found stranded in prisons in Libya.
