MOGADISHU (HOL) ----The Al-Qaeda linked Al-shabab group has flogged a Somali man in public after a court run by the group has convicted him of the rape charges leveled against him on Wednesday.
The whipping took place in Burhakaba, a town in southwestern Somalia as the man was given 100 lashes in an open area where the group’s
judge read the verdict before masked men started beating the man from the back.
Despite losing most its key strongholds, Al-Shabab still controls large swathes in south and central Somalia where the group carried out
numerous executions, amputations, stoning and floggings on suspected spies, thieves and adulterers.
Rights groups often accuse the group of administering arbitrary justice and severely restricting basic rights by carrying out targeted
killings including beheading and civilian executions.
Al-shabab is waging a deadly guerrilla war against the government and African Union forces across Somalia.
The allied African Union and Somali troops have launched a multi-pronged offensive which saw militants pushed out strategic towns and villages, however, the offensive was halted six months ago.
