At least 5 people have been killed when Al Shabab militants shelled on Madhoba Island south of the country on Saturdayafternoon. A number of other people were also wounded in the mortar shells.

The commissioner of Badhaadhe district in the Lower Jubba region Farah Haybe said in an interview with VOA Somali service that the shelling rained on residential areas in the Island causing the deaths and injuries of innocent civilians.

The commissioner noted that for the past several days Al Shabab were trying to siege the small Island trying to prevent commercial goods and people from getting and out of the Island.

AL Shabab previously controlled the Madhoba Island, but they were forced to leave earlier.
