MOGADISHU (HOL) — The Somali parliament is set to discuss a motion today to withdraw confidence from Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed.

The past three parliamentary sessions closed prematurely without official proceedings as parliamentarians disagreed over the no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed.

In a press statement, the Speaker of the Somali Parliament, Mohamed Sheikh Osman (Jawari), warned against any violation or disturbance in the upcoming parliamentary session.

The prime minister will be forced to resign if more than 50 percent of the lawmakers vote against him.

After the last parliamentary session failed and ended in disarray, Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed released a statement accusing the presidency of organizing an illegal no-confidence motion against him.

The Somalia prime minister stated that the motion of no-confidence has created obstacles towards implementing the Vision 2016 strategy and called on the Somali people to unite in safeguarding the Constitution and the rule of law.

The United Nations and the European Union have warned that the current political bickering between president and prime minister could destabilize the country and undermine Somalia’s development after decades of lawlessness.
