The release of an apartment surveillance video by police helped catch the suspect, police say.
Ryan Waddell, 27, has been charged with manslaughter and robbery in the death of Ahmed Mohamud.
Mohamud was found dead in a parking lot on Sixth Avenue North just before midnight on July 20.
A woman who identified herself as Mohamud's mother said in a brief telephone interview her son "was a good person," but she didn't know any further details about the case.
She confirmed he had been in Saskatoon only a week before he died.
Several people contacted in the apartment building Tuesday had heard about the case, but did not know any of the circumstances.
On July 29, Saskatoon police released video surveillance photos of five "persons of interest" in the case and asked for the public's assistance in identifying them.
Numerous tips were received by police and Waddell was arrested Oct. 1 outside the Saskatoon Correctional Centre. He appeared in court earlier this week and is being held in custody until his next appearance Oct. 12.
In a news release issued Tuesday, police thanked the public for their assistance. Police added the investigation is continuing.
