“Consolidating Local Peacebuilding Initiatives”

Clan rivalry, insecurity, pressure on livestock systems, and a series of failed harvests have all make the region a vulnerable to conflicts. Given the potential internal conflicts emerging in the region, Traditional elders have proposes peace Caravan through which community elders’ travel throughout Hiiraan region to spread message of peace and to encourage communities to consolidates existing peace in their respective districts, villages and settlement areas. The Peace Caravan is led by traditional leaders (ugases) representing from all clans in the region. Although the Peace Craven will stop in all major districts, it is expected to visit in areas of hot zones and remote villages, water points and grazing areas where potential conflict may arise. Ugaases will hold town-hall meetings in areas to be visited, conveying massages of peace; facilitating dialogue among clans and thus reducing potential interclan tensions.
The Peace Caravan begins today (May 25th 2007) starting from Jalalaqsi district. Hiiraan online will reports the progress of the peace caravan, both audio and pictures will be available.
