Kismayo, Somalia (HOL) - A local Sharia Court in Kismayo enforced a penal code today in Kismayo against a man accused of stealing possessions that are equivalent to $90.  The court convicted Mohamed Omar Ismael of the offence he committed and ordered his right hand  amputated.  The punishment was carried on Friday afternoon at Freedom Park (Beeerta Xuriyadda) opposite the headquarters of Kismayo District.  Thousands of local residents flocked to the scene to observe the event.  There was an apparent hubbub and rumbling noises from the crowd.  Security was tight and the local militia, known as Hizbada of Kismayo, were visible at the location.

This is not the first time that such criminal punishments are carried out in Kismayo. In the beginning of this year a similar sentence was carried on Yusuf Dhuhulow in the same site of the city.  The Islamic militia in Kismayo executed a number of other punishments since they took control of Kismayo.  It is not clear whether Mohamed Ismael stole for severe need or to prevent death in which case there may not be a penalty.
