MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (HOL) — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) on Thursday blasted President Donald Trump a “lying buffoon” after he claimed he had asked Somalia’s president to take her back, intensifying their long-running feud.
Omar, a Somali-born lawmaker and outspoken critic of Trump’s immigration policies, fired back on X after Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that he suggested to Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud that Omar be deported. “And he said, ‘I don’t want her,’” Trump claimed.
“From denying Somalia had a president to making up a story, President Trump is a lying buffoon. No one should take this embarrassing fool seriously,” Omar wrote.
Trump delivered the remark with a humorous tone, drawing laughter from aides and officials in the room. While he may have been bantering, his claim has not been corroborated. Trump attended events alongside world leaders during the U.N. General Assembly in New York earlier this month, but any meeting with Somalia’s president remains unverified.
It was the
second time in a week that Trump invoked Somalia while attacking Omar. In a post on Truth Social, he accused her of criticizing the United States despite Somalia’s challenges, describing the Horn of Africa nation as plagued by “poverty, terrorism, piracy, corruption, and pervasive violence.” He added: “All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America!”
Trump also revived claims about Omar’s personal life, suggesting she married her brother so he could gain U.S. citizenship, and called her “scum.”
Later aboard Air Force One, Trump escalated further, saying Omar “should be impeached” and mocking Somalia’s governance. “How are they doing? Do they have a president? Do they have police? They come from a place with nothing, and then they tell us how to run our country,” he said.
Omar, who immigrated to the U.S. in the 1990s and was elected to Congress in 2018, has frequently clashed with Trump, who often singles her out among the progressive Democrats known as “the Squad.”
