Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre on
Wednesday condemned what he described as an armed attack on the Wardhiigley
district police station in Mogadishu, calling it a failed coup attempt.
Prime Minister Barre said the assault was carried out by
armed militias opposed to the government and aimed at disrupting security and
order in the country.
“The attack on the police station was illegal and an attempt
to destabilize Somalia. I have ordered security forces to immediately confront
groups trying to undermine public safety, and those responsible must be brought
to justice,” Barre said.
The Prime Minister also directed security agencies to take
legal action against anyone involved in acts of violence or attempts to
forcibly seize government institutions.
The federal government echoed his stance, condemning what it
described as an armed attempt to seize control of the police station.
“Responsibility for the events rests with those who brazenly violated the
state’s authority, security, order, and laws,” the Ministry of Information said
in a statement.
The violence followed a lawsuit announced on Tuesday by the
Somalia Salvation Forum, a coalition of opposition leaders including former
President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, ex–Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, and
lawmaker Abdirahman Abdishakur. The group accused President Hassan Sheikh
Mohamud’s administration of corruption, constitutional violations, and illegal
land sales that displaced vulnerable families.
