Mogadishu (HOL) – The Somali government has deployed
additional forces to the outskirts of Mogadishu to strengthen security in the
capital.
The specially trained troops have been tasked with
monitoring movements in and out of the city to prevent possible attacks by the
Al-Shabaab group.
In recent hours, heavily armed soldiers in combat vehicles
have been seen conducting operations across several parts of Mogadishu.
“The operation, which is part of efforts to ensure the
security of the capital, targeted key areas suspected of security threats,” a
statement from the federal government said.
The deployment of the Haramcad (Cheetah) Police Unit follows
previous successful operations by the force in Mogadishu’s districts, which
helped stabilize much of the Benadir region.
