Mogadishu (HOL) – Somalia’s Lower House leadership has
warned lawmakers who have repeatedly failed to attend parliamentary sessions
without valid reasons or medical leave, after two scheduled sittings this week
were cancelled due to lack of quorum.
During Thursday’s session, the names of MPs who had been
absent from previous meetings were read out publicly as part of efforts to
promote accountability and responsibility among members.
The Federal Parliament is scheduled to meet three times a
week — on Saturdays, Mondays, and Wednesdays — but only one session was held
this week as the other two were called off due to insufficient attendance.
Speaker of the House of the People, Sheikh Aden Madobe, has
repeatedly urged MPs to attend sessions regularly to ensure the smooth running
of legislative processes and the fulfillment of constitutional duties.
The leadership also announced that the names of MPs who
continue to miss sessions will be mentioned in future sittings to hold them
accountable.
The Speaker stressed that the Parliament will take serious
action against any lawmaker who fails to perform their duties, emphasizing that
persistent absenteeism undermines the effectiveness and credibility of the
legislative body.
