Abdullahi Hussein Guudlawe dismissed the governor of Hiiraan region, Muse Salad
Wehliye.
A decree issued by President Guudlawe’s office on Monday
appointed Mohamed Arab Hussein Mohamed as the new governor of Hiiraan region.
The Director of Communications and Public Relations at the
Hirshabelle Presidency, Mohamed Shuuriye Nur, said the appointment of the new
governor came at the suggestion of the Vice President of Hirshabelle, Yusuf
Ahmed Hagar Dabageed.
The new governor of Hiiraan region previously served as
chairman of the Selection Committee for the Federal Parliament representing the
Hirshabelle constituency in 2021.
The appointment comes amid reports of a serious dispute in
recent weeks between the dismissed governor, Muse Salad, and Hirshabelle Vice
President Yusuf Ahmed Hagar Dabageed.
The disagreement that led to Muse Salad’s dismissal
reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the collection of taxes at Ugaas Khaliif
Airport in the town of Beledweyne between him and Vice President Dabageed.
It is not yet known what action the dismissed governor will
take. In the past, dismissed governors have opposed their removal. It is also
worth noting that Hirshabelle authorities have limited control over large parts
of the Hiiraan region.
