Somalia and Algeria sign wide-ranging cooperation agreements covering education, energy, and livestock

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Algerian President Abdulmajid Tabboun on Tuesday witnessed the signing of a series of landmark agreements aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation between the two nations across key sectors including education, energy, livestock, and agriculture.

The agreements, signed by the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Education, Livestock, and Petroleum, establish a strategic partnership that will expand trade, promote agricultural development, and facilitate investment in oil and natural gas.

They also introduce new travel arrangements for Somali diplomatic passport holders, who will now be granted entry visas upon arrival in Algeria.

Officials described the deals as a major step toward strengthening ties between Mogadishu and Algiers, emphasizing the shared commitment to advancing mutual development and reinforcing African solidarity.

President Hassan Sheikh expressed gratitude to the Algerian government and people for their “warm and fraternal welcome,” highlighting Algeria’s long-standing role in defending African interests and supporting friendly nations.

He also thanked President Tabboun for offering 500 scholarships to Somali students, particularly in fields critical to Somalia’s national development such as **agriculture, fisheries, and petroleum studies.

“Algeria’s investment in the education of Somali youth will have a lasting impact on our country’s progress,” President Hassan Sheikh said, describing the scholarships as a symbol of enduring friendship and cooperation.

The Somali leader further praised President Tabboun’s leadership in advancing the African Solidarity and Cooperation Fund, calling it “a visionary initiative that strengthens continental unity and sustainable development.” He said Somalia looks forward to benefiting from the fund as part of its ongoing recovery and reform efforts.

The visit marks a new chapter in Somali-Algerian relations, which both governments have pledged to expand through economic partnerships and joint initiatives aimed at fostering regional stability and prosperity.
