Hargeisa (HOL) — Somaliland police have launched a manhunt for a suspect who fled after killing a man Monday night in Hargeisa’s Ahmed Dhagah district, an incident that adds to growing concerns over violent crime in the region.
Police identified the victim as Mohamed Baashe Hassan. Authorities said the attacker escaped before officers arrived, prompting an immediate operation that led to the detention of several people believed to have information about the killing. Investigators are still working to confirm the suspect’s identity and determine what prompted the attack.
Police urged residents to share any information that could help locate the suspect, calling on the public to contact the nearest station with tips, reports, or suspicions. Officials said community cooperation remains essential for speeding up investigations and ensuring suspects are prosecuted.
The killing follows an uptick in homicides across Hargeisa and wider Somaliland in recent years. Many cases have been linked to domestic disputes, business disagreements, and personal conflicts, despite Somaliland’s longstanding reputation for stability and relative peace.
Security forces say they have increased operations to reinforce public safety and tracki down individuals involved in violent incidents. Police officials emphasized that bringing suspects before the courts remains a central priority.
Judicial authorities have been encouraged to process murder cases more quickly to reduce delays in the justice system. Courts in Somaliland continue to impose death sentences by firing squad in cases where defendants are convicted of intentional killings.
Police reported that most suspects tied to homicides reported this year have been arrested but urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with ongoing investigations.
