Mogadishu (HOL) — Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh
Ahmed met with U.S. Ambassador to Somalia Richard Riley in Mogadishu on Sunday
to discuss political and security developments and advancing Somalia’s
state-building process.
The meeting focused on strengthening the historical ties
between the two countries and the need for political stability as Somalia
prepares for nationwide elections scheduled for next year.
“We discussed the general situation in Somalia, especially
security and politics, and the importance of advancing the state-building
process, which is always based on political stability,” said Sharif in a
statement posted after the meeting.
Sharif also thanked the United States for its continued
support in security, counter-terrorism, and humanitarian assistance efforts in
Somalia.
The talks come amid growing diplomatic efforts to unify
Somali political leaders and support the country’s democratic transition. The
U.S. has reiterated its commitment to backing Somalia’s efforts to build
effective governance institutions despite persistent political and security
challenges.
