Baidoa (HOL) — Intense fighting broke out Monday morning
between Somali government forces and al-Shabab militants after the extremist
group launched an assault on a military base on the outskirts of Baidoa,
according to residents and security sources.
The attack occurred in the Bay-Burajeed area, roughly 10
kilometers east of Baidoa, between the town and the Daynuunay military
garrison.
Residents of Baidoa reported seeing emergency vehicles
transporting wounded soldiers and bodies from the area, though casualty figures
remain unconfirmed.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack through its
affiliated media channels, stating that its fighters had overrun the base,
killed government troops, and seized military equipment.
The group’s claims have not been independently verified.
As of Monday afternoon, neither the Southwest State
administration nor the federal government had issued an official statement
regarding the incident.
This is the second time in two months that the Bay-Burajeed
base has come under al-Shabab attack. In the previous assault, government
forces repelled the militants, reportedly killing dozens of fighters in the
process.
