Mogadishu (HOL) – Somalia's National Electoral Commission and Boundaries announced Monday the opening of registration for political organizations ahead of the upcoming one-person, one-vote election.
Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, the commission's chairman, Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan, emphasized that the 110 previously registered organizations must meet updated registration requirements and adhere to the new electoral laws. At the same time, the new organizations must also follow the official registration procedures.
"Starting today, January 20, through March 31, political organizations can register. Organizations already registered will not be charged any fees and will be issued certificates under the new regulations," said Abdikarin.
The commission plans to expand voter access by increasing the number of polling stations from 300, previously identified by the former commission, to 800 nationwide. Officials will begin marking these new polling stations next week.
The announcement follows a warning from former Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, leader of the Himilo Qaran Party, who criticized the federal government for its perceived unilateral approach to the electoral process.
Sheikh Sharif expressed concerns about potential divisions if the government proceeds with a one-sided election, cautioning that Himilo Qaran might consider organizing parallel elections in response. He stressed the need for consultations with the Jubaland and Puntland administrations to achieve a consensus for elections that include all regions of Somalia.
