Mogadishu (HOL) – Somali federal government has expressed strong support for the ongoing military operations against ISIS militants in Puntland's Bari region.
Deputy Minister of Information Abdirahman Yusuf Al-Adala lauded the Puntland security forces in a Facebook post, emphasizing the need for national unity in the fight against ISIS.
"Congratulations to the Puntland Dervish heroes who are chasing the ISIS Khawarij in the mountains. Your nation and the Somali people in general stand by you. The Khawarij are an enemy that is equally dangerous to the Somali people, and we must unite to eradicate them," Al-Adala wrote.
The Deputy Minister's comments come amid ongoing battles in Puntland's mountainous regions, where security forces have inflicted significant losses on ISIS militants. Puntland authorities reported on Monday that they had killed several ISIS fighters and seized eight terrorist outposts during operations in the Al-Miskat mountains of the Bari region.
Daesh has a relatively small presence in Somalia compared to the Al-Qaeda-linked Al-Shabab, but experts have warned of growing activity.
