Somali President signs law establishing independent national human rights commission

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Tuesday officially signed into law the establishment of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, following its approval by both houses of the Federal Parliament.

President Mohamud said the formation of the commission reflects Somalia’s firm commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of its citizens. He praised the strong cooperation between Parliament and the Federal Government, noting that their joint efforts were essential to ensuring the commission’s legal soundness and its alignment with constitutional and religious principles.

The President also commended the Ministry of Family and Human Rights for leading the legal and technical processes that paved the way for establishing a commission capable of fulfilling its national responsibilities.

President Mohamud prayed for the success of the commission members as they begin their work and reminded them of the critical duties ahead, safeguarding human rights and strengthening a system of governance grounded in justice, accountability, and transparency.

Minister of Family and Human Rights Khadijo Mohamed Al-Makhzumi thanked the President for completing the final step in establishing the Independent National Human Rights Commission.

"I would like to express my gratitude to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for officially signing or completing the establishment of the Members of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, which was previously approved by both Houses of Parliament and the Council of Ministers. The President's signature coincided with International Human Rights Day," said Minister Khadijo Mohamed Al-Makhzumi.

The presidential endorsement coincided with Somalia’s commemoration of Human Rights Day, marking a significant step forward as the nation continues efforts to advance human rights protection and institutional reform.
