Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia’s military court on Wednesday
executed two al-Shabab members convicted of killing government soldiers and a
prominent businessman in the capital, Mogadishu.
The men, identified as Saleebaan Hussein Nur Ali, also known
as Ali Siyaaf, and Abdulqadir Abuukar Ahmed, known as Nasruddin or Sabir, were
executed by firing squad in Mogadishu, according to military officials.
The court had previously found the pair guilty of carrying
out assassinations on behalf of the al-Qaida-linked group. Their cases were
heard on separate occasions, and Wednesday’s executions were attended by
military officers and relatives of victims.
This marks the third time in recent weeks that Somalia’s
military court has carried out executions of al-Shabab members sentenced to
death. The court has increasingly turned to capital punishment as the
government steps up its offensive against the insurgents, who have waged a
16-year insurgency against Somalia’s federal authorities.
Al-Shabab continues to stage attacks on security forces,
government officials and civilians, even as Somali troops, backed by local
militias and African Union forces, push to reclaim territory from the group.
