Mogadishu (HOL) — Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has
appointed Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur, widely known as Ameriko, as the new
manager of Mogadishu’s port, one of the country’s most vital economic
lifelines.
Nur, a former Somali ambassador to Kenya with decades of
diplomatic experience, replaces Ahmed Washington. The presidency did not
explain the reason for Washington’s removal.
Officials said Nur’s mandate will be to modernize port
operations and strengthen international partnerships at a facility that serves
as a critical gateway for Somalia’s trade and revenue.
Business and investment stakeholders welcomed the
appointment, voicing optimism that his leadership could boost commerce and
development in the capital and beyond.
The port of Mogadishu is among Somalia’s most important
state assets, providing customs revenue and acting as a hub for goods flowing
in and out of the Horn of Africa nation. The government has pledged to reform
key economic institutions as part of broader state-building efforts.
