Tuesday September 17, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) – The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, arrived in Mogadishu on Monday for high-level talks with Somali government leaders to enhance cooperation between Somalia and the regional bloc.

During his visit, Dr. Workneh met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Their discussions focused on critical regional issues, including security challenges, economic collaboration, and ongoing IGAD-led initiatives within Somalia. President Hassan reaffirmed Somalia's commitment to deepening ties with IGAD and contributing to regional stability.

At a key moment in the visit, Dr. Workneh signed an agreement with Somalia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Fiqi, to establish a Regional Centre of Excellence in Blue Economy. The center will focus on sustainable maritime development, marking a significant step toward leveraging Somalia's coastal resources for economic growth.

Dr. Workneh praised Somalia's progress in state-building, acknowledging the country's efforts in countering violent extremism, addressing climate-related challenges, and increasing inclusive governance. He reiterated IGAD's ongoing support for Somalia's path to sustainable peace and prosperity.

"Somalia is not only a founding member of IGAD but also a critical partner in our shared mission to promote peace and development in the Horn of Africa," said Dr. Workneh. "We stand with Somalia as it navigates its path toward sustainable peace and prosperity."

The Executive Secretary also met with IGAD mission representatives in Somalia, led by Mr. Mohamud Karshe, to discuss ongoing regional programs. The visit signals IGAD's continued dedication to assisting Somalia in its recovery and regional integration efforts.

As IGAD works with Somalia on cross-border initiatives and broader regional goals, the visit highlights the strengthening of diplomatic and technical ties that encourage long-term peace, security, and development across the Horn of Africa.
