Somalia approves key tourism deal with Kenya, pushes national unity

The Somali Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, convenes for its weekly meeting on Thursday, September 5, 2024, to discuss national security, unity, and economic cooperation. Key topics on the agenda included combating extremist threats and strengthening tourism ties with Kenya.

Mogadishu (HOL) — Somalia's government has called on its citizens to unite against extremist threats while approving a tourism agreement with neighbouring Kenya to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

At a weekly Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, the government prioritized national security and sovereignty, urging Somalis to reject actions that could cause division. Barre emphasized the need for political stability and collective action to combat extremist groups threatening Somalia's future.

The Cabinet praised Somalia's security forces and citizens for their ongoing efforts to defend the country and reiterated its commitment to eliminating insurgent threats. The Council of Ministers approved a tourism cooperation agreement with Kenya, The deal is expected to boost economic relations and tourism flows between the two nations.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Barre met with Dr. Abdullahi Bin Salim Al Nuaimi, the Qatari Ambassador to Somalia, to discuss strengthening ties between Somalia and Qatar. Barre expressed gratitude for Qatar's continued support, particularly in security, infrastructure, and essential services. Ambassador Al Nuaimi reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to assisting Somalia and expanding bilateral cooperation.
