Himilo Qaran Party urges leaders to avoid term extensions as NCC meeting continues

Friday October 4, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) – Somalia's Himilo Qaran Political Party has urged federal and regional leaders not to make political decisions that could worsen the country's ongoing crisis, particularly by extending their terms in office.

The opposition party, led by former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, released a seven-point communique on Thursday during a meeting in Mogadishu. The statement coincides with the ongoing National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting between federal and regional leaders.

Himilo Qaran specifically warned against extending regional government leaders' mandates, stating that such actions would serve President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's political interests.

"The party will not accept any extension of terms for elected bodies at any level. We called on the President to stop interfering in regional matters and to uphold Article 120 of the constitution, which grants regional governments the authority to hold their elections," the communique read.

Himilo Qaran also urged the federal government to prioritize resolving political disputes and conflicts that have erupted in several regions and focus on strengthening the national defense.

The NCC meeting, now in its third day, has addressed the terms of some regional state leaders whose mandates have expired, with opposition groups pushing for timely elections. The council has also discussed strategies for ensuring a smooth electoral process.
