Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs and
International Cooperation, Amb. Ahmed Moallim Fiqi Ahmed, launched the first
phase of planting 2,000 fruit, shade, and flower trees around the Ministry’s
building in Mogadishu on Monday.
The officials of the Ministry and its employees attended the
campaign, which is part of the Somalia Greening Campaign aimed at enhancing the
Ministry’s commitment to environmental stewardship and the promotion of green
spaces.
"As part of the Somali Greening Campaign, we are
planting 2,000 fruit, flower, and shade trees at the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs and International Cooperation. This initiative represents our new
contribution to environmental protection. 'Sow a tree today, reap protection
against desertification tomorrow,'" Minister Fiqi said.
Last year, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mahamud committed
$10 million to tackling climate change, desertification, and protecting
biodiversity in the Horn of Africa nation.
