National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting concludes in Mogadishu

Saturday May 18, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud concluded the four-day National Consultative Council meeting in Mogadishu on Friday, which was attended by the country's federal and regional state leaders.

The federal and Federal Member State leaders discussed security issues, endorsed amendments to the first four chapters of the constitution, and urged parliament to accelerate work on approving the remaining chapters, taking into consideration past agreements reached by the National Consultative Council.

The agreement quashes
rumors that the leaders of Jubaland, Southwest, Galmudug, and Hirshabelle were unhappy with the ongoing constitutional review process. However, the leaders of Puntland did not participate in the meeting and remained opposed to the constitutional changes.

The communiqué from the meeting also supported the federal government's plans to take over security responsibilities following the departure of the ATMIS force, which is expected to leave the country at the end of this year.
