Somalia's Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi
Mogadishu (HOL) —Somalia's Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi confirmed the country's determination to secure the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC), emphasizing the significance of this bid as Somalia's first major opportunity in forty years. Minister Fiqi voiced strong support for Somalia’s candidate, Fawzia Yusuf Haji Adan, the nation's former Foreign Affairs Minister.
In an intensifying competition, Fiqi also highlighted the challenge posed by Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga, whom he accused of supporting the balkanization of Somalia in the past, underscoring the need for Somali unity behind Adan. Fiqi's remarks come amidst unconfirmed reports of ongoing diplomatic negotiations, with Kenya recently urging Somalia to withdraw its nomination in favour of Odinga, who is seeking the endorsement of the East African Community (EAC).
Despite Kenya's diplomatic push, Somalia boasts the backing of nearly 30 African nations within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), signalling strong regional support for Adan's candidacy. This alliance could prove crucial as the AUC elections approach, set to be held in February 2025 at the 38th AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The bid for the AU chairmanship comes at a time when East Africa is designated to nominate candidates for the role, a policy intended to ensure regional rotation and representation. With her extensive diplomatic background and a platform focusing on pan-African unity and sustainable development, Adan represents a transformative figure in Somali politics and a potent symbol of its renewed engagement on the global stage.
Meanwhile, Djibouti has also entered the fray, nominating seasoned diplomat Mahmoud Ali Youssouf as its candidate, further intensifying the regional competition. As the election draws near, the political dynamics within the East African bloc are expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the leadership of the African Union, marking a critical juncture for regional cooperation and development.
