Minneapolis (HOL) — Suleiman Abdulkadir Ali, 30, has been charged with second-degree murder in the 2013 shooting death of Abdirahman Haji-Ahmed in Minneapolis. Ali was apprehended on May 1 in Grand Forks, N.D., and is currently detained in Hennepin County Jail with bail set at $2 million.

The murder occurred on October 30, 2013, near 12th and Washington avenues S., where police discovered Haji-Ahmed deceased with multiple gunshot wounds inside a running car parked outside a gas station. Investigators recovered five .45 calibre shells inside the vehicle, concluding that the shots were fired from the backseat. Surveillance footage from the night of the murder captured Ali, wearing a multi-coloured letterman-style jacket, exiting the vehicle shortly before the shooting.

A security guard reported seeing a man in a similar jacket jumping a fence and fleeing the scene. Near the fence, officers found a torn piece of cloth believed to be part of the shooter's jacket. This key piece of evidence linked Ali to the crime scene through DNA analysis, which indicated that Ali's genetic profile matches one that only .6% of the world's population could share.

The case initially went cold after Ali reportedly fled to Somalia. However, in 2022, a tipster contacted police claiming that Ali had admitted to the murder over a phone call on the day of the incident, seeking money to escape the U.S. because he had been recorded on security cameras.

In March 2024, detectives learned Ali had returned to the U.S. and was residing in Fargo. They obtained a warrant to collect his DNA, which led to his arrest after the analysis confirmed a match with the evidence from the 2013 crime scene.  Investigators believe Ali returned to the U.S. from Somalia two years ago.

Further investigation confirmed Ali's involvement, leading to his arrest under a sealed warrant. His next court hearing is set for May 16.
