Somaliland and Ethiopia sign agreement for police training program

Thursday May 9, 2024

Hargeisa (HOL) - The breakaway region of Somaliland and Ethiopia have signed an agreement in Addis Ababa, under which Ethiopia will train new police forces in Somaliland.

The Somaliland Police Force published on its Facebook page on Thursday that the President of the Ethiopia Police University, Deputy Commissioner General Mesfin Abebe, and the head of training of the Somaliland Police Force, Gen. Abdi Ahmed Tiir, signed the agreement regarding the training of police forces.

However, they did not provide further details about the deal.

The agreement followed Somaliland Police Chief Mohamed Aden Saqadhi’s recent visit to Ethiopia where he had a meeting with the Ethiopian Federal Police Commissioner.

In January, Ethiopia signed a sea access deal with Somaliland, a move Mogadishu rejected, calling it “illegitimate” and a threat to good neighborliness and a violation of its sovereignty.

The agreement allows Ethiopia to lease a 20-kilometer (12-mile) stretch of coastal land in Somaliland, giving the landlocked nation crucial access to the Red Sea through the port of Berbera.
