Puntland court sentences Al-Shabaab member to death for series of Galkayo beheadings

Garowe (HOL) - The Puntland military court sentenced Abdisalan Sahal Shuayb to death on Thursday for his affiliation with the Al-Shabaab terrorist group and his involvement in the beheadings of 15 individuals in Galkayo from 2017 to 2023.

Shuayb, identified as part of Al-Shabaab's execution team, played a critical role in targeting victims for the group. The victims included peacekeepers, army officers, and other officials. He utilized his position as a well-known taxi driver and broker to assist Al-Shabaab's operations, exploiting his community ties.

During the trial, Shuayb admitted that four of the victims were Al-Shabaab scouts, insisting his cooperation was due to intimidation by the group. His arrest in 2022 by Puntland security forces linked him directly to Al-Shabaab's most recent wave of violence in the region.

Al-Shabaab has carried out numerous terrorist acts in Somalia, including assassinations and raids on civilian and government targets.
