    MOGADISHU (HOL) — A major technological milestone was reached in Somalia on Thursday as Hormuud Telecom unveiled its 5G services, catapulting the East African nation into a new era of digital connectivity. 

    The launch event, attended by the President of Somalia, the Minister of Telecommunications, and Members of Parliament, underscores the government's commitment to leveraging technology for economic growth and stability. Initially available in major cities, including Mogadishu and Kismayo, the 5G network aims to cover 81% of the populace, focusing on urban and rural areas.

    The service's initial reach extends to major urban centers such as Mogadishu and Kismayo, with plans to cover 81% of the population. 

    "Today's launch is not just about faster internet speeds; it's about opening doors to new opportunities for every Somali," said Jama Hassan Khalif, Minister of Telecommunications. "Through enhanced connectivity, we envision a future where digital inclusion and economic resilience go hand in hand."

    Khalif elaborated on the collaborative efforts underpinning this achievement: "We are often asked about the country code +252. We have successfully distributed and managed this country code with Hormuud collaborating. Together, we have worked on data laws and other communication policies. We are grateful."

    Hormuud's 5G service promises unparalleled speeds and reliability. It supports a range of applications, from healthcare and education to agriculture, potentially transforming everyday lives. Additionally, this move aligns with Somalia's goals of integrating more fully into the East African Community and fostering regional trade.

    Despite challenges, including ongoing insurgency and infrastructural needs, the introduction of 5G is seen as a cornerstone for rebuilding and modernization. Hormuud Telecom, leveraging its extensive infrastructure, envisions a cashless economy facilitated by rapid, secure internet access.

    5G is expected to be transformative, particularly in healthcare and education. Mohamed-Khadar Ismail, Director of Business & Finance at iRise Hub, highlighted the profound impact anticipated in medical access and learning opportunities: "5G will enable our hospitals to access the world's most qualified doctors through telemedicine, allowing them to treat patients remotely. It will also enable us to learn from the world's most advanced universities, even when we cannot obtain visas to travel to those countries."

    Ahmed Mohamud Yusuf, CEO of Hormuud Telecom, underscored the company's pioneering role in Somalia's telecom evolution: "We lead the development of communication and technology in the country, having first implemented 2G, 3G, 4G, and 4G+. Today, we are proud to announce the successful launch of 5G, which we believe will significantly benefit the country."

    Yusuf highlighted 5 G's transformative nature: "This is more than connectivity. It's about empowering communities, promoting sustainable development, and ensuring that progress reaches every corner of our society."

    Hormuud Telecom is optimistic about the future, citing an existing 4G network that serves 70% of the population. The company anticipates an increase in coverage, with 5G services reaching 88% of urban dwellers and approximately 70% of rural communities within a year. The launch of the 5G network promises faster and more reliable internet services, with the company claiming over 80% coverage capability in its initial statement.
