Saturday March 16, 2024

Dhuusamareb (HOL) - Somali forces, supported by local militia, have killed the deputy head of the al-Shabab group for the Mudug and Galgadud regions after an ambush in the Dumaye area on Friday night.

Government officials stated that Mohamed Isaaq Aw-rage (Maradade), wanted by the Somali government for his terror acts, was killed, along with another foreign leader and five militants, while recovering their weapons.

However, the government did not provide the name of the foreign militant leader killed during the attack.

"This operation was carried out in areas where the Khawarij had stayed after receiving intelligence indicating they were preparing to move significantly. Maradade was involved in previous attacks in those regions," the official said.

The killing of the leader comes a day after the al-Shabab group stormed the SYL hotel in Mogadishu, resulting in the deaths of three soldiers and wounding 27 people.

Al Shabaab has been waging a brutal insurgency against Somalia's federal government since 2006 to try to establish its own rule based on its interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.
