Former Somali Presidents urge inclusive dialogue on constitutional amendments

Sunday March 3, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Former Somali Presidents Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed underlined the need for consensus among the Somali people regarding constitutional amendments during a meeting in Mogadishu on Saturday night.

The two former presidents are among the politicians strongly opposed to the government's efforts to amend the country's constitution.

"We discussed the country's situation, particularly political issues and the ongoing debate on constitutional amendments. We emphasized the need for extensive consultation on the country's state and the current constitutional matters," stated the two presidents after their meeting.

Farmajo and Sharif are reportedly organizing a large gathering of politicians and civil society to address concerns about the country's constitution and to call upon the government.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud stated his government's commitment to finalizing the constitution in January of this year, asserting that the country is moving forward. Mohamud insists that any action to amend the constitution will take effect after the next election.

However, last week, the country's Lower and Upper Houses lawmakers commenced the debate on the second chapter of the Constitution, focusing on Articles 10-20. This critical discussion impacts citizens' rights and responsibilities.
