President Deni ready for direct talks with Somalia’s federal government

Saturday June 15, 2024

Garowe (HOL) — Puntland President Saeed Deni has announced his readiness to enter direct negotiations with Somalia's Federal Government to discuss the country's governance.

Deni emphasized that political differences can be resolved through dialogue based on consensus and adherence to the constitution. "Puntland is warning that the country's government is being manipulated," Deni said, cautioning against policies he claims aim to hijack the constitution for the benefit of a specific group.

The recent decision by the Federal Government to reauthorize development projects in Puntland is viewed as an attempt to mend relations and address some of the grievances expressed by Puntland. These projects are crucial for the region's infrastructure and economic development, which had been stalled due to political tensions.

In March, Puntland declared it would no longer recognize the Federal Government after a disputed election and subsequent constitutional changes. The declaration led to Puntland's withdrawal of support from its federal lawmakers and its decision to operate independently from Mogadishu. The move was seen as a significant blow to Somalia's federal system, which has struggled to maintain unity among its member states.

Deni also stated that as government agencies return to the legal framework, Puntland is acting within the authority granted by both its own constitution and the federal government.
