RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (HOL) — Authorities in Saudi Arabia have arrested 14 individuals from India, Egypt, Pakistan, and Indonesia for allegedly selling fake Hajj identity cards. The arrests, part of a broader crackdown, underscore the kingdom’s efforts to preserve the sanctity of the Hajj pilgrimage.

The arrests were made in Mecca, involving individuals on visit visas. Security forces confiscated money, seals, cellphones, and computers used in the fraudulent scheme. This incident follows a series of similar arrests, including 11 expatriates recently detained for promoting fake Hajj tours. Authorities have also seized falsified pilgrimage permits and fraudulent Hajj bracelets.

Lt. Gen. Mohammed Al Bassami, Chief of Public Security and head of the Hajj Security Committee, reported the interception of 140 fake Hajj campaigns and the arrest of 64 transporters violating Hajj regulations. The Saudi government enforces strict penalties, including fines, deportation, and imprisonment, for unauthorized Hajj participants.

The kingdom has welcomed over 1.3 million pilgrims so far, stressing the need for stringent measures to ensure the pilgrimage’s safety and sanctity. Unauthorized pilgrims face fines up to SR10,000 ($ 2,665 USD), with harsher penalties for repeat offenders. Transporters of illegal pilgrims risk up to six months in jail and fines of up to SR50,000 ($13,327 USD).

Somalia has been actively coordinating with Saudi authorities to ensure a smooth Hajj for its pilgrims. The Somali Hajj committee, established in October 2023, recently met with Saudi officials in Mecca to inspect accommodations and improve services. Approximately 11,000 Somali pilgrims are expected this year despite the high cost of the pilgrimage, which remains a contentious issue.
