Nairobi (HOL) — A Busia court has sentenced Jackton Jacob Kanoti, also known as Abdul Hakim, to 30 years in prison for his involvement with the terrorist organizations Al-Shabaab and the Islamic State of Iraq.

Kanoti was arrested in Siaya township in December 2021 and was found with materials related to terrorist activities. The court's decision came after an intensive two-and-a-half-year trial. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) reported that Kanoti accessed terrorism-related content through his mobile phone, including videos and chats from various Telegram groups.

"The court established beyond reasonable doubt that the evidence adduced by the prosecution was credible and consistent for conviction," the DCI stated.

The trial and subsequent conviction are part of broader efforts by the Kenyan authorities to clamp down on terrorism. In a March meeting with top security officials in Narok, the head of state reiterated his commitment to restoring peace and order. Similar arrests have been made in recent months.

Kenya continues to face challenges from terrorist groups, particularly from the military insurgent group Al-Shabaab, which has been a persistent threat since Kenya began its operations against the group in Somalia in 2011.
