Minneapolis (HOL)— The search for 4-year-old Waeys Ali Mohamed, a Somali-American boy with autism, came to an end on Monday when his body was found in Minnehaha Creek, approximately 500 yards from his home.
Waeys, who was non-verbal and easily startled by loud noises, was last seen around 7:30 a.m. on Sunday near the Chorus Apartments on Lake Street. He was wearing only blue pajama pants. An emergency alert was issued shortly after he was reported missing.
The Hopkins Police Department led the massive search involving numerous law enforcement agencies, community members, and volunteers. Small drones, K-9 units, search and rescue teams, and watercraft were all used in the operation. Despite the creek's swift current and high water levels caused by recent rains, searchers persisted.
Hopkins Police Captain Craig Kreiling announced that Waeys' body was found at 10:40 a.m. on Monday by a volunteer searcher. Kreiling emphasized that while the investigation is ongoing, initial evidence suggests that Waeys drowned after leaving his apartment on his own. "This appears to be a horrible, tragic accident," Kreiling said.
The Somali community in Minnesota played a significant role in the search efforts. Abdirahman Mukhtar, a community activist, highlighted the family's distress, noting Waeys' vulnerability due to his autism. Mukhtar underscored the need for community vigilance and support in such situations.
Thomas Knapper, a volunteer and father, shared his emotional involvement in the search, reflecting the community's empathy and dedication. "I have two sons, and I can't imagine losing either one of them. Even though I'm disabled, I had to try to help," Knapper said.
Authorities urge the community to remain vigilant and report any unusual activities. "Get to know your neighbors and step up if you see something out of the ordinary," Kreiling advised.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office will determine Waeys' exact cause of death. Meanwhile, the community mourns the loss of a young life and reflects on measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
