MAPUTO, Mozambique (HOL) - Somalia's hopes for a resurgence in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers were dealt a blow as they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Botswana at Estádio do Zimpeto on Monday. The loss leaves Somalia at the bottom of Group G, still searching for their first points in the campaign.

The Ocean Stars began the match with determination, but Botswana quickly took control. Thabang Sesinyi broke the deadlock in the 10th minute, setting the tone for a challenging game for Somalia. Despite their efforts, the Somali defence struggled to contain Botswana's aggressive play.

In the second half, Botswana continued to press, with Mosha Gaolaolwe scoring in the 53rd minute, capitalizing on Somalia's defensive lapses. The Ocean Stars' resolve was further tested when they conceded a penalty in the 71st minute, which Kabelo Seakanyeng converted, extending Botswana's lead to 3-0.

However, Somalia showed resilience and heart. Substitute Sakariya Hassan managed to find the back of the net in the 74th minute, giving the Ocean Stars a glimmer of hope. Despite this, Botswana's defence remained steadfast, and Somalia could not close the gap further.

The defeat exposed the Somali team's challenges in their World Cup qualifying journey. With matches against tough opponents like Guinea coming up in March 2025, the Ocean Stars will need to regroup and strengthen their strategy to turn their fortunes around.

Match Summary:

  • Somalia (0) 1: Hassan (74')
  • Botswana (1) 3: Sesinyi (10'), Gaolaolwe (53'), Seakanyeng (71')
