Somali President, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken speak by phone

    Mogadishu (HOL) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud spoke by phone on Saturday with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken about bilateral relations between the two countries.

    The Somali presidency said that Mohamud and Blinken focused their talks on issues such as the fight against terrorist groups and the Somali government's plans post-ATMIS forces. They also discussed the security and stability of the Horn of Africa and the role of the United Nations Office in Somalia (UNSOM).

    UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the designation of James Swan on May 14. Swan previously served as the special representative for Somalia and head of UNSOM from 2019 to 2022, after a long career in the U.S. diplomatic service.

    Swan was deputy assistant secretary of state for African affairs from 2006 to 2008 and director of African analysis in the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research from 2005 to 2006.

    Regarding the drawdown of ATMIS forces, Somalia is currently discussing with international partners about deploying multinational troops in the country for one year, starting in January 2025. However, the name of the new mission and the exact number of troops have yet to be finalized.
