Governor Nathif Jama announced during the groundbreaking ceremony at the Garissa County Referral Hospital that the new facility will house over 400 beds and serve not only Garissa but the entire Northern Kenya region, neighboring counties, and Somalia.

"In 2013, before devolution, Garissa's maternal mortality rate was 3,795 per 100,000 live births. By 2018, it had improved to 500 per 100,000 live births," Jama said, emphasizing that the new hospital will further reduce these figures once operational.

“This project, one of my campaign promises, will be a real legacy for our region. We plan to complete it in 20 months,” Jama added.

Dr. Hawa Boi of Garissa County Referral Hospital highlighted the importance of the new facility in reducing pregnancy-related deaths and improving healthcare outcomes.

“As an institution, we are honored to have a facility that will compare with other county-level 5 hospitals. This development makes us proud and hopeful for the future of healthcare in Garissa,” Dr. Boi said. She added that the hospital would not only improve survival rates for newborns but also ensure they thrive and contribute positively to the county's future.
