Somali lawmaker accuses government of death threats over al-Shabab attack comments

Saturday July 20, 2024

Mogadishu (HOL) - Federal lawmaker Abdirisakh Abdullahi Moalim Eid has accused government officials of threatening to kill him after he commented on al-Shabab attacks on the central prison and Top Café restaurant in Mogadishu.

Speaking at Saturday's parliament session, the lawmaker emphasized that he was threatened with being shot in the head and was falsely labelled as a member of al-Shabab.

"I am not a member of al-Shabab, but I care about my people because I am responsible. I am the representative who was elected to talk about these issues. Their last word was if you talk about this again, you will be shot in the head," said the MP.

He added that the government has not taken any action in response to these threats.

MP Eid did not identify who threatened him but vowed to prepare a report for parliament on the person who threatened him.

At least eight people were killed after gunfire erupted between security forces and inmates at a prison in Somalia's capital, Mogadishu. The confrontation broke out when armed inmates attempted to escape, prompting an exchange of fire that left five prisoners and three soldiers dead, said Colonel Abdiqani Khalaf, spokesperson for the Somali army's custodial corps.

The prison incident was followed by a car bomb explosion outside Top Café restaurant in Mogadishu, killing at least nine and injuring several others as patrons watched the final of the Euro 2024 football tournament on TV.

The al-Qaeda-linked armed group al-Shabab claimed responsibility for last week's deadly attack via an affiliated radio station, stating the bombing targeted a place where security and government workers meet at night.
