Mohamed Abiib, Somaliland MP representing Awdal region, faces allegations regarding his visit to Djibouti, which has sparked significant backlash and condemnation from Somali MPs.

Hargeisa (HOL) — Some members of Somalia's Federal Government House of Representatives have condemned a proposal by Somaliland's Attorney General to remove MP Mohamed Abiib from his position in the Somaliland House of Representatives.

MP Asha Koos, representing Somaliland's Awdal region, stated that the people of Awdal elected Abiib and enjoys immunity, making his removal from office impossible. "We stand united in the belief that if Abiib is targeted, the rest of us from Awdal will resign," she added.

The MPs warned that any action against Abiib, accused of visiting Djibouti and the Somali embassy there, would prompt the people of Awdal to reconsider their affiliation with Somaliland. They stressed that Abiib's actions, as described by Koos, were not criminal and that Somaliland's top leaders should be held accountable.

The controversy underscores the ongoing tensions between Somalia and Somaliland, which declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but remains unrecognized internationally. The dispute over Abiib's actions reflects broader issues of governance and representation in the region.
