Mogadishu (HOL) - At least 50 al-Shabab militants were killed in military operations conducted by Somali army forces, supported by local militia and international partners, in the Galgadud region over the last few days.
The operations occurred in the Dhabaqle rural area, located between Masagaway and Cosweyne districts in the Galgadud region.
The Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism said in a statement released on Monday that the operation resulted in the deaths of leaders and militiamen. The operation was launched after the National Army and local forces received information about an al-Shabab gathering in the area.
The government added that the National Army and local militia forces are currently in the areas where the fighting took place and are still pursuing the fighters and leaders who escaped.
The operation comes two days after an al-Shabab suicide car bombing outside a cafe in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, killed nine people and wounded 20 others. The bombing targeted a location where security and government workers meet at night.
