Galmudug and Puntland authorities enforce ceasefire in Mudug region

    Garowe (HOL) - Authorities from the Galmudug and Puntland regional states have successfully convened two rival clan militia groups to fully implement a ceasefire, ending deadly fighting in the Mudug region.

    Galmudug Security Minister Mohamed Adan Gabobe announced on Friday that troops from the Galmudug presidency were deployed to the conflict areas. He added that troops from the Puntland presidency are set to join the Galmudug forces to enforce the law and prevent further conflict.

    The two clans have each selected 13 traditional elders to form peace committees that will discuss how to end the conflict in the western areas of the Mudug region. Minister Gabobe expressed optimism about resolving the conflict between the communities.

    "We discussed that when the meeting is over, the mayors from both administrations should take responsibility for their districts, and troops will be deployed to arrest those who caused harm," said the security minister.

    Last week's inter-clan fighting killed nearly 30 people and wounded more than 50 in a rural area between Goldogob and Saah Qurun in the Mudug region. The conflict involved militias from the Sa'ad and Lelakase sub-clans over a land dispute.
